Because I will be at two book fairs this week, I have a Special Book Fair Deal for you on Don’t Betray Me! A deal born out of necessity…
Next week, MelVertel will be at the Children’s Book Fair in Gouda and at the MH Book Event in Tiel. Enough reason to offer a very special limited edition of Don’t Betray Me now at a very nice price. But this Special Book Fair Deal is born out of necessity. Read the whole story here:
Once upon a time, there was a self-publisher…
When you independently publish a book, you sometimes encounter surprises. It starts like this: you write your story, you find an illustrator and a designer, and then you go to the printer. So far, nothing unusual.
Until you eagerly open
Oh, oh…
the box with the English editions of Don’t Betray Me and realize that something is not quite right. This copy of Don’t Betray Me – The Secret of Amsterdam feels a bit lighter than the proof copy you know so well.
You leaf through the book.
The story is all there.
The illustrations and the photo album pages are too.
And then the timeline, also complete.
But where is the Glossary? The word list in which Hebrew and other difficult words are explained?
And the Read More pages with websites and books for those who want to read more about the Second World War and the people and locations from the book?
And where are the acknowledgements for everyone who played a role in the making of the book? Where is the author information about myself?
In short, where are the last 10 pages of the book?
Oops, thanks
A book is printed on large presses in so-called sections. These sections are then all bound together at the end of the process and glued into a cover (or sewn, but in this case glued, because it’s a paperback edition). Unfortunately, the printer forgot to bind the last section. Well, and then there are 20 boxes. In your hallway. A few hundred incomplete books. They can’t go to bookstores or libraries. And the printer will provide a new shipment, but that will be 500 more, which haven’t been sold yet.

Limited Edition Don’t Betray Me
But, those who are not strong must be smart, and a self-publisher is naturally also an entrepreneur, and entrepreneurs don’t get caught off guard. They immediately start ’thinking differently.’
The facts:
-The story is complete and therefore fully readable for both children and adults.
-All the drawings and photos are in the book.
-The timeline, in color, is completely intact.
So it is mainly the extras that are missing. That can be solved: you have an insert printed with the glossary and the author information and place it at the back of the book;
-
- You place the Read More pages on your website so that people who are interested can find all the information here that would otherwise be in the book.
Even better, they can click through directly, and as a writer, you can add to this list at will, so it is actually more up-to-date and complete than a printed list could ever be;
you put the Acknowledgments on your website so that the people who played a major role in creating your book get all the attention they deserve – and perhaps more! - you design a sticker indicating that the buyer is dealing with a unique and limited edition here;
- you sign each book – so it is now a
Pre-Publication Signed by the Author Limited Edition!
- You place the Read More pages on your website so that people who are interested can find all the information here that would otherwise be in the book.
And then you go to book fairs with it: November 22 in Gouda at the Children’s Book Market, and November 30 in Tiel at the MH Book Event.
And then you also tie in a special offer, which is valid in the weeks before Sinterklaas, from November 21 to December 5, which also includes Black Friday – that’s just a coincidence, I really don’t like Black Friday stunts.
This Pre-Publication Signed Limited Edition of Don’t Betray Me – which is completely complete and very suitable for schools, book clubs, individual readers, and read-alouds – does not cost €15 this week but
ONLY € 10,- ex. postage (in The Netherlands).
You can also pick it up in Utrecht, please send me an email
